New on SI: Could Patrick Mahomes' New Contract Reset the Market, Notably for Dak Prescott's Negotiations?

There are some important

contract situations to be worked out in the NFL. Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys being the most notable case. However, Patrick Mahomes' new deal could be even more significant. Sports Illustrated host Robin Lundberg talked with Conor Orr of the MMQB and Joshua Briscoe of Arrowhead Report about why the Cowboys would be wise to get Dak's deal done before the Chiefs and Mahomes work out his.

Robin Lundberg: Dak Prescott's contract negotiations have been all the talk. Patrick Mahomes' is next deal could be even more significant. For more, I'm joined by Connor Orr of the MMQB and Joshua Briscoe of Arrowhead Report. Connor, let's start with you, because I know you believe that Dak should get a deal done soon before--or the Cowboys should get a deal done soon before Mahomes blows the market out the water.

Conor Orr: Yeah. I mean, this is just basic math, right? Unless you're Carson Wentz or Jared Goff and you're willing to sneak in below that high average for your salary. Patrick Mahomes is going to blow up the market. And a rising tide lifts all boats. And so I think it's a really interesting strategy by the Cowboys to wait and to be patient here when there's this gargantuan contract that could change the way we look at quarterback deals coming down the pike.

Robin Lundberg: Joshua, obviously, the chiefs aren't gonna hesitate to give Mahomes a new deal, but how much back and forth do you expect before they get there?

Joshua Briscoe: Quite, quite a little. I would say because of exactly as you said, there's no chance this doesn't ultimately get worked out. There's been a little bit of talk about the idea of maybe having his contract be a percentage of the salary cap for a certain number of years. I just don't see that much imagination coming from guys who are making up the NFL contracts that often. So I do think Mahomes is going to reset the market. But I also think he is such a unique circumstance that maybe with the eventual exception of Deshaun Watson, it's gonna be really hard to use Mahomes as a starting point because nobody else is Patrick Mahomes. So I think it gets done relatively quickly. I think it's done this offseason. I think it's going to be for a lot of money.

Robin Lundberg: Connor, after Mahomes signed that deal, is anyone going to be talking about the quarterback eating up too much of their salary cap?

Conor Orr: I don't think so. I think this one will reset that conversation, put it to bed for quite some time.
